Anti-Valentine's Boudoir: The Heartbreak Club
Every Valentine's campaign in this industry assumes there is a partner. For an enormous number of women there isn't one this year, either by choice or by something that happened, and the relentless pink of the whole month can be genuinely wearing.
What is an anti-Valentine's boudoir session? A Valentine's mini on our black room set, styled the opposite way — black wardrobe, hard light, dark roses on the floor. Same format as any other mini: thirty minutes, one set, five retouched images, $349. It runs on Friday, January 29.
What the set actually is
Our black room, stripped back. One hard light from the side, so half of you is lit and half of you disappears. Dark roses on the floor rather than in your hands. Black wardrobe — leather, a sharp blazer over nothing, thigh-highs, a red lip.
The styling brief we gave ourselves was simple: she should look expensive, not heartbroken. That distinction is the whole set.
Who books this
In our experience, four kinds of women, and none of them are sad about it.
The recently divorced. Often the most decisive bookings we take all season. There's frequently a specific thing being marked — a date, a signature, the end of a year that was hard.
The freshly single. Sometimes weeks out, sometimes a year. What they have in common is wanting a photograph of who they are now rather than who they were in the last set of pictures anyone took of them.
Women who bought themselves the ring. Genuinely a category. It comes up more than you'd think.
Women who simply aren't celebrating. Partnered or not. Not everybody wants roses in February, and that's allowed.
Why it doesn't have to be about anybody
The thing we'd gently push back on is the idea that this is a revenge photoshoot. It isn't, and the sessions that treat it that way tend to be the least interesting ones.
The best frames from this set are the ones where she isn't performing anything at all — standing square to the camera, not smiling, not selling it. That's a harder photograph to take and a much better one to own. If you're arriving with something to prove, we'll gently take it off you at the door.
