When to Schedule Maternity Boudoir (Best Week of Pregnancy)

If you’re planning a maternity boudoir session, the question that matters most isn’t what to wear — it’s when. Shoot too early and the bump hasn’t arrived; too late and you’re wishing you’d gone sooner. There’s a window most mothers choose, and it’s shorter than you’d expect.

Short answer: most maternity boudoir is photographed at 28–32 weeks — the bump is at its most defined while comfort, movement and stamina are still on your side. Reserve 6–8 weeks ahead (most mothers book around 20–24 weeks), and professional hair and makeup is included.

The sweet spot: 28–32 weeks

By the third trimester your bump is unmistakably round and photographs beautifully, and you generally still feel mobile enough to enjoy the session. Weeks 28 to 32 is the window most of our maternity clients choose — the bump is at its most defined while comfort, movement and stamina are still on your side.

Earlier or later works too

You’re not locked to those four weeks. At 20–26 weeks the bump is visible but softer and your energy is usually highest — a good choice if you’re high-risk, expecting multiples, or want a subtler shape. By 26–28 weeks it’s rounded and unmistakable and you’re still very mobile. From 32 weeks on it’s beautifully full; we simply shorten the session, add more seated and supported posing, and build in extra breaks — and 34–38 weeks is absolutely possible, just call first so we can plan a gentler session. Twins and multiples usually shoot closer to 26–30 weeks.

“I booked for 31 weeks and it was perfect — big enough to show, comfortable enough to actually enjoy it.”

What to wear for the bump

Soft, supportive, and nothing has to fit — open robes and white sheets are the most-photographed maternity look we shoot. Also lovely: a soft bodysuit or simple lingerie, flowy draping, an oversized button-down, or your partner’s shirt. Many mothers bring jewellery, a keepsake, or their first ultrasound photo. Our closet runs XS–5X, and because maternity bodies change fast, tell us your due date when you book so we pull pieces that still fit the week of your session. Our full what-to-wear guide goes deeper.

Book ahead

This is the one session with a real deadline attached, so reserve 6–8 weeks ahead — which for most mothers means booking around 20–24 weeks. That leaves time to plan wardrobe, hair and makeup before you’re in nesting mode. Your session fee includes professional hair and makeup and three different looks across our sets, so all you have to do is show up. See the maternity boudoir page for full details, or the full experience if it’s your first time in front of the camera like this.
