What to Wear for a Modest or Implied Boudoir Session in Utah

If you want boudoir images but the idea of lingerie-only makes you want to close the tab — this one’s for you. A modest or implied session can be as covered as you like, and the wardrobe is what makes that work. Here’s exactly what to bring, sorted by how covered you want to feel.

Short answer: for a modest or implied boudoir session, bring pieces that cover as much as you want — an oversized button-down, a slip dress, a robe, soft knitwear, a bodysuit, or a simple sheet. You set your coverage on a soft-to-bold scale, and our studio closet runs XS–5X if you’d rather choose here.

Start with your comfort level

The easiest way to plan wardrobe is to decide how covered you want to feel first, then pick pieces to match. This post is the wardrobe companion to our guide to modest and implied boudoir — start there if you’re still deciding whether this is for you.

Soft — fully covered

An oversized button-down, a chunky knit worn off one shoulder, a slip dress, a robe worn closed, wide-leg trousers with a bralette, or your partner’s shirt. Completely covered, completely beautiful.

Classic — a little more

A bodysuit, a high-waisted set, a slip worn as intended, or a sheer layer over something solid underneath. The coverage most people picture when they think boudoir.

Implied — covered, but suggestive

A sheet held close, a robe open over something underneath, an off-shoulder knit, or a turned back. Skin is suggested rather than shown — the most editorial look we shoot, and still entirely modest.

Fabrics and colours that photograph well

Soft textures read beautifully on camera — knit, linen, silk, satin, and anything with drape. Choose tones you already know suit you, and skip stiff waistbands or large logos, which pull the eye. When in doubt, one simple piece you feel wonderful in beats three you’re unsure about.

What you don’t need

You don’t need lingerie. You don’t need to buy anything — our in-studio closet runs XS–5X and we’ll pull pieces for you. And you never need to show more than you want; the whole session is built around the line you set before we start.

Where to shop

Our in-studio closet is the easiest option, and our Amazon closet has covered and modest picks if you’d rather bring your own. Modest boudoir wardrobe questions

What do you wear for a modest boudoir session?

Covered pieces you feel good in - an oversized button-down, a slip dress, a robe, soft knitwear, a bodysuit, or a simple sheet. You choose how much coverage.

Can I stay fully covered for boudoir?

Yes. You can be completely covered for the entire session and still get striking, intimate images - many of our sessions never leave robes, slips and sheets.

Do I have to wear lingerie?

No. Plenty of modest sessions use only robes, slips, sheets, knitwear and oversized shirts - lingerie is optional, never required.

What is implied boudoir?

Covered but suggestive - a sheet held close, a turned back or a bare shoulder. Skin is suggested rather than shown, so it stays modest while feeling editorial.

What if I don't own anything to wear?

Our in-studio closet runs XS to 5X, so you can choose here and nothing has to be bought ahead of time.
